In this interview, Amna shares how flexible working has empowered her to complete tasks at her most productive times and attend medical appointments without the constraints of traditional office hours. She believes that this flexibility not only benefits her personally but also contributes to a positive work environment at RSSB. By fostering a culture of trust and autonomy, the smart working policy allows employees like Amna to thrive and exceed expectations.
What has flexible working at RSSB meant for you?
Flexible working has allowed me to manage my workload more effectively and be able to complete my detailed reports at a time when I am most productive. This allows me to retain control in maintaining my own health and wellbeing by attending medical appointments without worrying about these being in the constraints of working 9-5. Flexible working has given me an overall sense of a good work-life balance without feeling torn between personal commitments and work.
What benefit do you think there are to others and RSSB?
In one of my previous roles as a nurse in occupational health, I had undertaken employer referral assessments and most of these were ‘stress-related’ and on assessment, it would transpire that individuals were struggling to maintain a healthy work-life balance and the employer had not considered measures to support a return to work which allowed some flexibility for the employee. When an employee/colleague doesn’t feel like they are on a tightrope trying to manage all aspects of life, you are able to retain staff who feel valued, provide better outputs with job satisfaction.
By allowing autonomy to structure your work day, you are able to take initiative this creates a mutual respect where you feel a sense of trust has been invested in you and as an employee, in return you want to ensure you exceed any expectations.
How are you taking advantage of the smart working policy?
After having spoken to my manager, I am able to have later start times, when required.
What has it enabled you to do differently?
I dislike early mornings (surprisingly sunrises abroad I can manage!) but I work more effectively after 09.30 am so starting work at that time also allows me to avoid gripping my steering wheel tighter as I sit in standstill traffic.
How has smart working changed the culture at RSSB?
Overall, the employee surveys, employee annual benefit choices, and implementation of the smarter working policy together create a positive culture demonstrating employee health and wellbeing as a focal point for leadership.
