Making the move to Manchester: Perfect for lovers of culture, media and sport

Category: Career Resources

Working for DCMS - Manchester

The vibrant city of Manchester has so much to offer, including culture, sport and easy access to the countryside – DCMS employees share their experiences of living and working in the north-west.

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport’s (DCMS) growing presence in Manchester has opened up exciting opportunities for people interested in working for an organisation that makes a real difference to so many lives, while enjoying the many benefits of living in this diverse region.

Since expanding its Manchester presence in 2022, DCMS has attracted people who are keen to live in a lively city with great transport links and plenty to do outside of work hours.

Manchester City Centre- Train & Tram

“It's a very lively city without being too busy and everything is easily accessible,” says Darryl, Resourcing and Recruitment Policy Manager. “It has some great areas within Greater Manchester that have more chilled vibes, such as Sale and Didsbury, and great local transport links to most UK areas. It is a true northern hub.”

“It's busy enough that there are lots of opportunities, but not too big of a city that it feels overwhelming,” says Beth, Diversity and Inclusion Manager.

Manchester is an easy city to get around, according to Rachael, Policy Assistant, especially if you travel by tram. She loves having a commute that is “not underground.”

With DCMS focusing on improving culture, media and sport across the country, it is fitting that the Manchester team gets to benefit from the city’s cultural and sporting attractions, as well as plenty of choices for foodies.

Ollie, Policy Officer, says Manchester is a friendlier alternative to the capital and the food scene “is the best in the UK outside of London.”

“There is no better place to live if you're interested in sport – particularly football – and the music scene is unrivalled,” Ollie continues. “And if history is your thing, there are so many places to visit, in part owing to the fact Manchester was the first city to industrialise.”

Darryl describes the food and drink scene as “very eclectic”, while singing the praises of Manchester’s “great theatres and nightlife.” Meanwhile, Gregory, Strategic Case Lead, simply says the best thing about the entertainment on offer is the “grassroots live music!”.

The city has just the right amount of hustle and bustle for Rhianna, Recruitment Coordinator: “Manchester is such a social city – there's always something going on after work whether it be a gig, pub crawl, sports game or a class – it's so easy to meet new people and there are so many things to show visiting friends and family.”

“There’s so much variety across the city” adds Abby, Head of Arts Council England Sponsorship. “The galleries, theatres and museums are excellent for a Saturday – each area of the city, Salford and the suburbs have its own unique identity.”

Beyond Manchester’s city centre, there is plenty to love about surrounding areas, whether you’re looking for somewhere a bit more relaxed to live or you like to get out and about in your spare time.

While Laura, Policy Advisor, loves the diversity of central Manchester with everything in walking distance, she says it’s great to be so close to the countryside: “The Peak District is 40 minutes away by car or train, the Lake District is 90 minutes away, and north of Bury, you have the Lancashire valley, which is literally 20 minutes drive from centre of Manchester.”

Hannah, Charities Legislation Adviser, commutes from Lancashire, but agrees with Laura that Manchester has “fantastic links to many places”, including Wales. She has lived in London and Manchester and says that Manchester has a “more relaxed feel” than the capital, “but still has the opportunities and innovation that London has.”

“The best of all worlds!” is how Rosie, Policy Advisor, sums up Manchester. “Eclectic city life – and you're only ever 30 minutes away from stunning hikes in the hills in every direction.”

Above all, Manchester has a well established reputation as a welcoming, tolerant city that embraces all people. As Stacey, Careers Manager, concludes: “I enjoy the freedom to be myself and the celebration of diversity.”
