Reclaiming Narratives: How Storytelling Broadens Perceptions and Fosters Inclusion

In celebration of Black History Month, Hachette UK's employee-led network, THRIVE, in collaboration with our Changing the Story initiative, hosted an inspiring event on the theme of “Reclaiming Narratives.” This year, our focus was on the transformative power of storytelling to broaden perspectives and amplify diverse voices.
The event featured an exceptional panel, including Leah Davis, Dr. Abi Daré, Benjy Kusi (Assoc CIPD), and Paula Akpan, who each shared personal insights on the importance of “Black Joy.” They spoke on seeing all intersections of the Black community represented in stories, honoring the experiences of Black elders, and creating inclusive spaces that empower people to show up as their authentic selves.
Alongside thought-provoking conversation, guests enjoyed snacks from Black-owned businesses Puff Puff Ministry and Chloe’s Kitchen Creations, and took home books by Black authors.
We’re grateful to the panelists and our THRIVE Network for a memorable event. This gathering reminded us that storytelling is a powerful tool for fostering empathy and inclusion—allowing everyone’s voice to be heard, celebrated, and truly seen.
